2015 Steel City Invitational features 2015 state champions and top players
Knight Eady has announced the participating teams and the first-round matchups for the third annual Steel City Invitational. The event will take place Dec. 19, 21 and 22, and features 12 teams from across the state of Alabama including four 2015 AHSAA Basketball State Champions, and an additional five of the 2015 AHSAA Basketball State Finals participating teams.
“The Steel City Invitational has quickly become a premier high school basketball tournament for the state of Alabama,” said Chris Nix, Chief Development Officer at Knight Eady. “We are excited to welcome these top teams and marquee players to this year’s tournament, and we look forward to some of the best basketball the state has to offer.”
The 2015 7A Champion, Hoover, will go head to head against Woodlawn standout senior shooting guard and UAB commit, Javien Williams. The winner between Hoover and Woodlawn will face J.O. Johnson, led by John Petty and Justin Hopkins, who helped J.O. Johnson claim the 2015 5A state crown.
Additionally, 5A runner-up Ramsay will face Pelham in the first round. The winner will battle against 2015 5A semi-finalist, Faith Academy. In another first round game, the Homewood Patriots will face the Jackson-Olin Mustangs. The winner of the Homewood vs. Jackson-Olin match up will play against Josh Langford of Madison Academy, the ASWA Class 3A Player of the Year, after leading the Mustangs to the 2015 3A state title.
Bessemer City will take on 2015 1A champion, Sacred Heart on the opening day. The winner will play against Mountain Brook and one of the nation’s top-ranked basketball prospects in the class of 2019, Trendon Watford.
The Steel City Invitational will also feature a girls showcase game between defending 6A champion Homewood, and four-time 3A champion Lauderdale County.
The three-day event will be held at Samford University in the Pete Hanna Center. There will be a winners bracket and a consolation bracket, and all teams are guaranteed at least one game each of the three playing days. The championship will be held on Tuesday, December 22.
