Auburn and UAB featured in basketball doubleheader in Birmingham Dec. 16

*Auburn will play MTSU, UAB faces Alabama A&M in the BHM JAM *

Knight Eady is proud to announce a new event coming to Birmingham this winter. The 2017 BHM JAM is a doubleheader college basketball event featuring the Auburn Tigers and the UAB Blazers. The neutral-site doubleheader will be played Dec. 16 in Legacy Arena at the BJCC. UAB will take on Alabama A&M at 2:15 p.m. CT, followed by Auburn and MTSU in a nationally-televised matchup on the SEC Network at 5:00 p.m. CT. Tickets for the event are on sale now through Ticketmaster and at the BJCC box office.

This marks a rare occasion in which Auburn and UAB are playing in the same venue on the same date. Birmingham sports fans in the area have a unique opportunity to see college basketball during the holiday season, and a 90’s throwback theme for the event will give teams, coaches and fans a great experience.

Neutral-site college basketball games have been played in Legacy Arena at the BJCC numerous times since the venue opened, but this will be the first multi-game regular-season event in the arena since 2007. The BHM JAM also marks the first time Auburn and UAB have played together in a doubleheader since 2001.

BHM JAM will be the first time Auburn will play in Legacy Arena under Coach Bruce Pearl, making the BHM JAM an exciting opportunity for Auburn’s more than 25,000 Birmingham-based alumni to see the Tigers play. Additionally, UAB students and fans have the unique chance to see the Blazers play in a neutral-site game right in their home city. While UAB is the only Birmingham-based team competing in the BHM JAM, many teams have ties to the city. Alabama A&M’s Donnie Marsh served as the UAB men's basketball associate head coach from 2006–2012, and the BHM JAM marks the first time Marsh will face the Blazers as the new head coach at Alabama A&M. Additionally, MTSU won back-to-back Conference USA Tournaments in Birmingham at the BJCC in both 2016 and 2017.

The BHM JAM features a 90’s theme, which will provide both fans and teams with an exciting experience beyond the in-game matchups. Fans can expect 90’s music and themed in-game activations, hosted by Josh Snead of SEC Shorts. During the halftime event of each team’s game, two 90’s era players from Auburn and UAB will be recognized on the court.

“We love bringing the Auburn Tigers to Birmingham for our remarkable fan base in the Magic City and north Alabama,” remarked Coach Bruce Pearl. “We helped pack Bartow Arena last year and look for the same support this year in the BHM JAM in Legacy Arena. It will be a fantastic matchup with Middle Tennessee, which made back-to-back NCAA Tournament second round appearances with wins over Michigan State in 2016 and Minnesota last season. Kermit Davis is recognized among the top coaches in the nation.”

We hope this event will be a staple for years to come among sports fans in our great city.”

In addition to the games, Auburn and UAB’s men’s basketball teams will participate in an educational and community engagement event at the Civil Rights Institute on Dec. 15.

Knight Eady worked with Auburn and UAB to conceptualize the event and will manage and market the BHM JAM.
